I somewhere along the way became fascinated with exploring characters who are willing to put themselves into violent situations, whether it’s football, hockey, boxing, being a cop, being a soldier. There’s not a lot of people who are willing to put themselves into those situations.
Certainly we’re not satisfied with just winning games. We’ve been playing some pretty good hockey, but we think we can play much better.
I saw the older kids entering the rink carrying hockey sticks and bags, and I was fascinated by the equipment. Once I started skating faster, I was attracted to the speed and dynamics of hockey. I never looked back!

I am like the Jack Nicholson of the Kings – every single game. If there was a game tonight I wouldn’t be here. I used to play hockey. That was my original thing. My first thing, I wanted to play professional hockey.
I know that, in hockey, the object of the game is simple in that you have to get the puck into the net. With figure skating, it’s not as simple, and there is a ton of work that goes into it.
Before, baseball was something to do to get ready for the hockey season. Now, people look to play baseball, period. It’s something you stick with.
A good ice hockey player is someone who has good communication skills, is willing to listen and willing to try new things. It’s a very technical game and not that easy to pick up. It’s a lot of fun but you just have to be patient.
How do we make hockey more affordable? How do we get it into more households? How do we keep it part of the conversation? Those are things that will help us not only increase registration numbers from a grassroots level but also deepen the player pool from the senior national team and the elite level.
You’ve just got to go out there and try to control the things you can control. Deal with things and stay mentally strong.
I never got really good at hockey.

I think we’ve been through a lot this season and it will be nice to move on. It’s one step at a time though. The focus of our hockey club was great. We really stuck to our game plan and didn’t get too high or too low and we definitely didn’t get over excited.
A NASCAR guy can drop-kick another driver through his car window and it is just considered part of the sport. Hockey players drop their sticks and pound on one another on a regular basis and no one dares blame it on anything other than just a boiling, competitive spirit.
